In Memoriam: Lindley S. Butler
We are saddened by the news that Lindley S. Butler died April 12, 2022, after a period of declining health.
UNC Press was able to provide Butler with advance copies of his final book, A History of North Carolina in the Proprietary Era, 1629-1729 (on sale 5/17/22), in recent weeks, and he was able to celebrate its arrival with his family before his final days.
Butler was also the author/editor of the following UNC Press titles: The North Carolina Experience: An Interpretive and Documentary History; Pirates, Privateers, and Rebel Raiders of the Carolina Coast; The Papers of David Settle Reid, Volume 1: 1829-1852; and, The Papers of David Settle Reid, Volume 2: 1853-1913.
Lindley S. Butler received his A.B., M.A., and Ph.D., degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to numerous articles and reviews, Butler published two brief histories of Rockingham County and monographs on the coming of the American Revolution, local Scouting, and early Albemarle County.
