William E. Leuchtenburg, 1922-2025

Established in 2025 by his family, the William E. Leuchtenburg Fund at the University of North Carolina Press honors Bill’s decade-long membership on the Press’s Board of Governors and his preeminent scholarship in American history.

Throughout his long life, Professor Leuchtenburg remained committed to advising, counseling, critiquing, and encouraging works by many who became leading scholars of their generations. Accordingly, the Fund will help publish works by early-career scholars that reflect Leuchtenburg’s unusually broad interests in American history and culture. These works will not only launch and solidify academic careers by shaping research and teaching in their fields but also have the potential to appeal to wider audiences.
