WATCH: Harlem Book Fair Panel – “Can We Tell the Truth about the Black Past?”

guridyEarlier this month the 12th annual Harlem Book Fair hosted a panel that included UNC Press authors Frank A. Guridy and Stephen Gillroy Hall. A video of the discussion, called “Can We Tell the Truth About the Black Past?”, is available through C-SPAN’s Book TV, which can be viewed here.

hallGuridy is the author of Forging Diaspora: Afro-Cubans and African Americans in a World of Empire and Jim Crow, which examines the cross-national relationship between Afro-Cubans and black Americans after the War of 1898.

Hall is the author of A Faithful Account of the Race: African American Historical Writing in Nineteenth-Century America. His book examines the history and development of influential African American writing before the civil rights movement popularized awareness of the culture.

Also present in the panel was Duke University Press author Monica Miller, author of Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
