Video: Elizabeth Barnes talks Love’s Whipping Boy

Today we get to visit my alma mater with a recent feature at William & Mary News in Video (hark upon the gale!).  Elizabeth Barnes’ Love’s Whipping Boy: Violence and Sentimentality in the American Imagination was W&M’s Book of the Month.  Here, she explains the patterns she found in 19th century literature, using the experiences of John Brown and Frederick Douglass as cases where violence and sentimentality can coexist.

Check out the accompanying article that explains how the idea of simultaneous love and hate has informed one of Barnes’ courses at William & Mary here.
