How to Support Indie Bookstores on Independent Bookstore Day

This Saturday, April 29th, is Independent Bookstore Day. Started in 2013, this year marks the 10th anniversary of Independent Bookstore Day which takes place each year on the last Saturday in April to celebrate and promote independent bookstores.

Here at UNC Press, we love indie bookstores. We frequently work with bookstores and authors to coordinate events, our staff takes frequent trips to our local stores to promote on our social media channels, and we have a link to Bookshop.org on all book pages on our website.

In celebration of Independent Bookstore Day we’ve put together a list of a few simple ways that you can support indie bookstores this Saturday, and everyday!

VISIT YOUR LOCAL INDIE
The most fun way to support indie bookstores is to visit them this Saturday, April 29th! Many bookstores host special events, offer exclusive items, and do other fun things to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

SHOP ONLINE
Can’t make it to your local independently owned bookstore or don’t have one near you? No problem! You can still support them by shopping their online store or shopping on Bookshop.org or Indiebound. We include a link to Bookshop.org on all of our book pages, so feel free to browse our site and then jump over to Bookshop.org to purchase.

GET SOCIAL
Another way to promote Indie bookstores is to engage with them on social media. Some easy ways to engage are:

  • Follow your favorite bookstores
  • Like and share their posts
  • Post photos of books you’ve purchased from them
  • Tag them in other relevant posts and stories
  • Use hashtags #independentbookstoreday #shopindie #indiebookstoreday

We hope you are all able to get out and support indie bookstores this Saturday. If you happen to spot a UNC Press book while you’re out, tag us so we can share it!
